How Leeds City Region has supported the NHS
1) Emergency Medicine
Maurice Ellis FRCS, was born in Leeds in 1905. An innovative clinician and passionate teacher, Maurice pioneered Emergency Medicine, becoming the UK�s first Consultant in Casualty at Leeds General Infirmary in 1952 and the founding president of the Casualty Surgeons Association.
2) Hand Transplants
Leeds General Infirmary was the home to the first hand transplant in the UK in 2012 and also the first double hand transplant in the UK in 2016. Chris King, the recipient of the double hand transplant told The Guardian in 2017 �how he had got his life back since the surgery�. The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is now UK�s specialist centre for hand transplants.
3) Digital systems
Leeds based BJSS and NHS Digital (formerly the Health and Social Care Information Centre) also based in the city worked collaboratively to create the new NHS Spine which supports the IT infrastructure for health and social care in England, joining together over 23,000 healthcare IT systems in 20,500 organisations.
4)Hip Replacement
Charles Thackray a Leeds pharmacist and manufacturer of surgical instruments worked with Sir John Charnley - an orthopaedic surgeon -to pioneer the hip replacement.
5) Fighting Cancer
In 1960, Bradford Royal Infirmary made international headlines following pioneering work in the fight against breast cancer by George Whyte Watson and Professor Robert Turner. Their research into chemotherapy gave the hospital a worldwide reputation for cancer treatment and changed the management of the disease forever.
