20 March 2020
The event, running 21st-24th March, celebrates the key themes of WORK, LIVE, PLAY and LEARN to enable the sharing of innovations that will drive future free trade, enhancing the Golden Era of UK-China relations.
This follows news that Halifax-based digital learning company, Frog Education, has been nominated for an award in the "LEARN" category, with results to be announced at the Festival.
The Leeds City Region delegation comprises representatives from Huddersfield-based ConnectChina Ltd, Grant Thornton International Ltd, Leeds-based Nine Health CIC, Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and MindYerBusiness.
Roger Marsh OBE, Chair, Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership said:
"It's a great vote in confidence that a Halifax company, Frog Education, have been nominated for an award at the GREAT Festival of Innovation in Hong Kong.
"We're delighted to attend to seek out new trade opportunities and showcase our strengths in innovation. I look forward to working with the UK government and key partners in Hong Kong to promote UK excellence and to find opportunities for collaboration."
Jon Geldart, Chair of the Yorkshire & Humber Institute of Directors, said:
"Britain has long been known in China as long on innovation but short on capital to exploit its great ideas and to expand. From craft brewing to nursery school provision, graphene technologies to high speed rail, Britain has some of the best, most skilled engineers, entrepreneurs and designers in the world.
"If we can scale these niche UK brands into the ASEAN markets, and specifically China, we will have a bright and prosperous future."
Elaine Taylor-Whilde, CEO of Nine Health CIC, said:
"The Hong Kong government has put in place $50 billion for supporting innovation and technology development. Companies such as Nine Health Global are poised to use this supportive environment to develop new super computational predictive clinical tools to improve the health of the population of Hong Kong, and subsequently of the rest of China.
"We create tailored solutions for individuals enabling personalised predictive health and educational applications that can result in radical improvement and save lives."
Leeds City Region is recognised for innovation within the Northern powerhouse, and UK, particularly within the financial sector. It is known as the Fintech Capital of the North because of the development of tech innovations that are changing the way the finance sector operates.
This is demonstrated by Lloyds Banking Group who host their Digital Transformation Lab in the region and employing over 8,000 people. The sector is further strengthened with significant capabilities in payments processing, with 60 per cent of global foreign exchange transactions executed using software developed by Leeds-based BJSS. Hong Kong's status as a financial capital means there are exciting opportunities for collaboration with Leeds City Region to transform the future of financial services.
The importance of overseas trade was recently highlighted in a report by HMRC. It found in the year to June 2017, the overall value of Yorkshire and Humber trade in goods exported increased significantly by 13 per cent compared with the same period to June 2016.
