The Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC)

The Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) is a network of world-leading research and innovation centres working with advanced manufacturing companies across the world.

The Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) is a network of world-leading research and innovation centres working with advanced manufacturing companies around the globe. It transforms industrial and economic performance by making step changes in productivity, increasing competitiveness, developing new products and processes, and training new talent and skills.

The AMRC’s capabilities in the Space sector include: thin-walled and precision machining technologies; additive manufacturing, including multi-material and hybrid machining; joining technologies including automated adhesive and robotic welding; assistive technologies for batch production and mass customisation; augmented reality and virtual reality for right-first-time and training purposes; lightweighting; metrology and quality control, including inspection techniques driven by artificial intelligence.

It has 120 industrial members including global giants like Boeing, Rolls-Royce, McLaren Automotive, BAE Systems, Airbus and smaller companies which make up critical supply chains. The AMRC is utilising advanced materials and technologies to take the weight out of the aerospace sector to improve efficiency and reduce costs as the UK makes the transition to a low carbon economy. The AMRC also has one of the most advanced titanium melting facilities in Europe, and broke new ground with the largest ceramic shell titanium casting ever created from a single pour in Europe.

We are proud to be working with the Satellite Applications Catapult to try to answer some of the key outstanding questions about technology in the satellite sector

Boeing, which is a founding partner of the AMRC, has been central to the exploration of Space, from the first Mercury capsule to the current International Space Station, and beyond to the Space Launch System. Likewise, the AMRC’s industrial partner, Airbus has been at the heart of Europe’s Space endeavours for half a century. It is now working with Safran Landing Systems on the record breaking Ariane launcher programme, and BAE Systems, who are central to AMRC’s mission, are key players in civil and commercial Space communications. Project engineers from the AMRC’s Design and Prototyping Group won a top innovation award after radically rethinking the way spacecraft valves work.
