The textile sector is an industry built on remarkable history and heritage but one which is also an industry for the 21st century, at the forefront of innovation, sustainability, and design for the future. Hong Kong and Leeds City Region are both leading centres in this sector, with expertise ranging from designers and technology partners collaborating to make fashion more sustainable, to textile and product manufacturers creating new and innovative fabrics and finished garments.

Andrew Wright, Chair, A W Hainsworth, & Chair, Leeds City Region BIG Panel

Andrew Wright is a broad experienced business leader with a proven track record of negotiated success in challenging international environments and several high tech industries. He came to West Yorkshire 8 years ago after an international career leading businesses in Europe, China, and India and is now the Chairman of AW Hainsworth and Sons, a 240 year old Family owned textile business based in Pudsey. Andrew aims to improve the sustainability of industry, working passionately to create organisations that make a difference, achieve profitability and are humane places to work, he specialises in creating and managing high performing teams which partner to create high tech solutions to new problems, business development and Factory Management. Andrew currently chairs the Business Innovation and Growth Panel of the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership. 

Professor Stephen Russell, Director, Future Fashion Factory, and Professor of Textile Materials & Technology at the University of Leeds 

Professor Stephen Russell is Professor of Textile Materials and Technology in the School of Design at the University of Leeds and Director of the Future Fashion Factory research and development programme. His main areas of expertise are in textile engineering, textile design and manufacture. In addition to academic research, he has over fifteen years product development and Company Director experience in the textile industry. In 2005 following external investment, he founded NIRI Ltd, a rapidly growing University of Leeds spin-out company that serves the global nonwovens industry. He is also the Director of the Clothworkers' Centre for Textile Materials Innovation for Healthcare. 

Professor Parik Goswami, Co-Investigator, Future Fashion Factory, and Director, Technical Textiles Research Centre, and Head of Department in Fashion and Textiles at the University of Huddersfield.

Professor Parikshit Goswami is the Director of Technical Textiles Research Centre and is the Head of Department of Fashion and Textiles at the University of Huddersfield. Prior to joining the University of Huddersfield, Professor Goswami was the Director of Research and Innovation at the School of Design, University of Leeds and he led the Fibre and Fabric Functionalisation Research Group. Professor Goswami (BSc (Tech), MSc, PhD, MRSC, ASDC, C Col, FTI, CText, CMgr, MCMI, FHEA) completed bachelor’s degree in textile technology and then worked within different industries, including a world-leading third-party textile testing and quality certification company. Subsequently, he did his MSc in Advanced Textile and Performance Clothing, and his PhD from the University of Leeds. Professor Goswami’s domains of research are product development using flexible materials and application of chemistry for functionalising textiles. He is a member of Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC), Education, Qualifications and Accreditation Board (EQAB), a trustee of SDC, and is a member of EDANA’s R&D working group. 

Daisy Ip,  Director, UK, Benelux and Ireland, Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) 

Daisy heads up the marketing and operational functions at the HKTDC’s London office, looking after the UK, Benelux and Ireland markets. She has been with HKTDC for the past ten years, working closely with stakeholders, trade associations and industry players to promote trade in all sectors between Hong Kong and the UK, Benelux and Ireland. HKTDC promotes Hong Kong's two-way trade in goods and services with the world. It is a leading organiser on international trade fairs and conferences in Hong Kong, and of promotional events around the world. As a result of the global Covid 19 pandemic, many of these activities are currently undertaken in a virtual format or online. The Council operates business matching services which put enquirers in touch with suppliers, customers and potential business partners in Hong Kong. HKTDC's economists supply the latest market intelligence about business opportunities in Hong Kong, the Asia-Pacific and elsewhere. 

Andrew Davis, Head - Investment Promotion, investHK

Mr Andrew Davis is Head of Investment Promotion, UK Office for InvestHK, the Hong Kong SAR government department responsible for attracting and facilitating foreign direct investment into Hong Kong. He joined InvestHK in February 2010 initially as Associate Director-General in the Hong Kong Head Office. He led the Tourism & Hospitality, Creative Industries, Consumer Products, Business & Professional Services and Transport & Industrial sector specialist teams. In mid 2015, he relocated to London to lead the UK Team. Prior to joining Invest Hong Kong, Mr Davis worked in both investment promotion and trade development for International Business Wales and its predecessor the Welsh Development Agency (WDA).  He is an Asia-Pacific specialist, having spent much of his career in the region, including over 19 years in Hong Kong. 

Christian Layolle, Head of UK, The Mills Fabrica 

Christian Layolle is the Head of UK of The Mills Fabrica, an innovation platform supporting startups driving a more sustainable future for the food and fashion industries. Having launched in Hong Kong in 2018, The Mills Fabrica will open this Summer in London’s Kings Cross area, where its startup incubator programme, co-working space, experiential retail store, tech lab, events and more will host the UK's community of entrepreneurs working towards a circular economy. Christian was formerly the Global Head of Business Development at The Business of Fashion (BoF), the leading resource for the global fashion industry. Having joined in 2013, Christian was one of the first team members at BoF who helped pave the way to its global renown today. He spearheaded the development of BoF’s two principal platforms including its recruitment site BoF Careers, and its content subscriptions BoF Professional, which today cater to over 400 fashion and luxury brands worldwide.
