International Activity


The team is currently leading a number of initiatives for engaging the Chinese market through partnerships with the Leeds City Region China Business Club, the China Britain Business Council (CBBC), and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT). A roundtable focused on how businesses in Leeds City Region and in China can work together on e-commerce technologies particularly around payment technology, cyber security and web development, has resulted in a delegation from CCPIT visiting the City Region to explore partnership opportunities in more depth.

Leeds City Region China Business Club and the University of Leeds have also partnered with the LEP to deliver a business showcase and afternoon tea hosted by the Lord Mayor of Leeds to graduating Chinese students and their families in order to showcase the economic opportunities available within the City Region.


Following a visit from the Estonian Ambassador in March, during which a Memorandum of Understanding was discussed regarding sector similarities and opportunities between the Estonian economy and that of the City Region, a delegation from Leeds City Region has made a reciprocal visit to Tallinn. The visit, which was supported by UKTI, included meetings with the Ministry of Economy and Estonian Embassy alongside FinTech companies and also included visit to the Lootsa 5 Acclerator, a state of the art building in Technopolis Ulemiste Smart City. The aim of all this activity is to progress the potential bilateral working agreement between Leeds City Region and Estonia within the FinTech sector in order to capitalise upon the growth within the sector that is currently worth �20bn in the UK.


Representatives undertook a two day visit to Lille on a fact finding visit around economic development, trade and inward investment opportunities. The programme included visits to Lille�s Technology and Health clusters, Euratechnologie and Eurosante, alongside meetings with the Chamber of Commerce Lille and Nord France Invest, the region�s investment promotion agency. The visit has identified potential areas of collaboration around cyber-security, payments technology, ecommerce and health.

The visit also took in Euralille, an example of city centre regeneration and development based around the Eurostar station, providing insight into the opportunities available at similar sites in Leeds City Region, such as Leeds South Bank.
