Selby has a skilled workforce, with a third of people educated to degree level, allowing companies to recruit the skills they need within the local area.

Situated within commuting distance of Leeds, York and Doncaster, with excellent road links with the A1(M), M1 and the M62 and only 150 minutes to London by train, Selby is a well-connected base for businesses.

As a major manufacturing centre, food and drink dominates Selby’s output, with companies like Rank Hovis, Supercook, Westmill Foods, Tate & Lyle and three breweries (Sam Smiths, John Smiths and Coors) in Tadcaster. Selby is also a major manufacturing and distribution hub for Debenhams, Sainsbury’s, Optare, Eddie Stobart, Kingspan and Legal & General Homes.

Doncaster International Railport and Wakefield Europort are nearby, allowing goods to arrive in Europe within 24 hours, making Selby a prime location for import and export to European markets.

Selby offers affordable business space for companies to invest and grow. Work is underway on the £105m Sherburn2 business park, which will offer logistics and warehousing units ranging from 35,000 sq ft to 575,000 sq ft and will create up to 2,550 new jobs.

Plans have also been approved to develop Kellingley Colliery as a business park, offering up to 1.45 million square feet of manufacturing and distribution space. See the Selby District Council website for more information.
